Why Accurate Measuring Matters in Resin Art
Epoxy resin is a chemistry-based medium. The curing process depends entirely on the correct ratio of resin to hardener being combined and mixed thoroughly. Even small deviations from the correct ratio can result in resin that does not cure properly, stays tacky, remains soft, or develops sticky spots. Accurate measuring is not optional in resin work. It is the foundation of every successful pour.
Most epoxy resin systems use a 1:1 ratio by volume, meaning equal parts resin and hardener. Some systems use a 2:1 ratio or other proportions. Always check your specific resin brand's instructions before measuring and never assume the ratio based on another brand you have used before.
Measuring by Volume
Graduated Mixing Cups
Graduated mixing cups have measurement markings on the side that allow you to measure liquid volume directly in the cup you will use for mixing. This is the most common measuring method for resin art because it is fast, requires no additional equipment, and eliminates the need to transfer resin between containers.
To measure by volume, pour Part A into the cup to your desired amount, note the measurement line, then add Part B to the corresponding line based on your ratio. For a 1:1 ratio, if you pour Part A to the 100ml line, add Part B until the total reaches 200ml.
The accuracy of this method depends on the quality of the markings on your cups. Look for cups with clearly printed, evenly spaced graduation marks. Cheap cups with inaccurate or unevenly spaced markings can introduce ratio errors that affect your cure.
Separate Measuring Cups
For greater accuracy, measure Part A and Part B in separate graduated cups before combining them in a third mixing cup. This allows you to verify each component independently before mixing and reduces the risk of over or under-pouring one component.
Measuring by Weight
Digital Scales
Measuring by weight using a digital scale is the most accurate method for mixing epoxy resin. Weight measurement eliminates the visual estimation involved in reading graduated cup markings and produces consistent, repeatable results pour after pour.
To measure by weight, place your mixing cup on the scale and tare it to zero. Add Part A until you reach your desired weight, then tare again and add Part B according to the weight ratio specified by your resin brand. Note that weight ratios are different from volume ratios because Part A and Part B have different densities. Always use the weight ratio specified by your manufacturer, not the volume ratio, when measuring by weight.
Choosing a Digital Scale
For resin work, use a scale that is accurate to 0.1 grams and has a capacity of at least 500 grams to 1 kilogram. A tare function is essential so you can zero out the weight of your mixing cup before adding each component. Kitchen scales in this range are widely available and work well for most resin pours.
For very small pours such as jewelry or detail work, a jeweler's scale accurate to 0.01 grams provides even greater precision and is worth the investment if you work at small scales regularly.
Common Measuring Mistakes
The most common measuring mistake is eyeballing the ratio rather than measuring precisely. Even experienced artists can misjudge volume by 10 to 15 percent when pouring without measuring, which is enough to cause curing problems in many resin systems.
Another common mistake is using the volume ratio when the manufacturer specifies a weight ratio, or vice versa. These are not interchangeable. A 1:1 volume ratio is not the same as a 1:1 weight ratio for most resin systems.
Measuring into a cup that already has residue from a previous pour is also a source of error. Always use clean, dry measuring vessels for each new pour.
Measuring Pigments and Additives
When adding mica powder, glow pigment, or other additives to your resin, a small digital scale is also useful for measuring pigment loading rates accurately. Most pigment guidelines are expressed as a percentage of total resin weight, so having a scale makes it easy to calculate and measure the correct amount without guessing.
