What Is a UV Lamp?

A UV lamp is a light source that emits ultraviolet radiation, typically in the UVA range between 365 and 405 nanometers. UV lamps are used in a variety of applications including nail curing, resin curing, sterilization, and charging photoluminescent materials. In the context of resin art, UV lamps serve two distinct purposes depending on the type of resin being used.

UV Resin vs Epoxy Resin

Understanding the difference between UV resin and epoxy resin is essential before deciding whether a UV lamp belongs in your studio.

UV Resin

UV resin is a single-component resin that cures when exposed to ultraviolet light. It does not require a hardener and does not involve a two-part mixing process. UV resin cures in seconds to minutes under a UV lamp, making it ideal for small, detailed work, jewelry, and quick projects. However, UV resin is typically more expensive per volume, has limited working depth since UV light cannot penetrate thick pours, and is not suitable for large functional pieces like trays or coasters.

Epoxy Resin

Epoxy resin is a two-part system that cures through a chemical reaction between the resin and hardener. It does not require UV light to cure and will cure in ambient conditions given the right temperature and humidity. Epoxy resin is the standard for functional, large-format resin art including all Trayz N Beyond pieces. A UV lamp is not required for epoxy resin curing.

How UV Lamps Are Used With Epoxy Resin

Even though epoxy resin does not require UV light to cure, UV lamps have two useful applications in an epoxy resin studio.

Charging Glow in the Dark Pigment

UV lamps are one of the most effective tools for charging glow in the dark pigment in cured resin pieces. Photoluminescent pigments absorb UV light more efficiently than visible light, which means a UV lamp produces a faster, stronger, and longer-lasting glow charge than standard indoor lighting. Exposing a glow piece to a UV lamp for 5 to 10 minutes produces a significantly brighter glow than 30 minutes under a regular light bulb.

UV-Resistant Topcoats

Some UV-curable topcoats and sealers are applied over cured epoxy resin and then cured with a UV lamp to create an additional protective layer. This is an advanced finishing technique used to add extra gloss, scratch resistance, or UV protection to a finished piece.

Choosing a UV Lamp for Your Studio

If you work with glow pigments or UV resin, a UV lamp is a worthwhile addition to your studio. Look for a lamp that emits in the 365 to 405 nanometer range for the most effective photoluminescent charging. Nail curing lamps in the 36 to 48 watt range work well for small pieces. For larger pieces or faster charging, a dedicated UV flood lamp or UV LED panel provides broader coverage.

Avoid very cheap UV lamps that emit primarily visible purple light rather than true UV radiation. These produce minimal charging effect on glow pigments and are not effective for UV resin curing.

UV Safety

UV light can cause eye and skin damage with prolonged exposure. Never look directly into a UV lamp while it is operating. Use UV-blocking safety glasses when working with UV lamps for extended periods. Keep UV lamps directed away from your face and body and avoid unnecessary skin exposure. Most UV lamp sessions for resin work are short enough that casual exposure is not a significant concern, but consistent protection is good practice.
