Why PPE Is Non-Negotiable in Resin Art
Epoxy resin is a powerful and versatile medium, but it requires respect. Uncured epoxy resin and hardener are chemical compounds that can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and respiratory sensitization with repeated unprotected exposure. The risks are not dramatic or immediate for most people, but they are cumulative. Artists who work without protection for months or years can develop sensitivities that make it impossible to continue working with resin at all.
Proper PPE is not about fear. It is about protecting your ability to keep doing what you love for years to come. Every piece that leaves the Trayz N Beyond studio is made with full PPE in use. This guide covers what you need and why.
Gloves
Nitrile Gloves
Nitrile gloves are the standard for resin work. They provide a reliable barrier against both the resin and hardener components and are resistant to the solvents used for cleanup. Use gloves that are at least 4 mil thick for adequate protection. Thinner gloves can allow chemical permeation over extended contact.
Do not use latex gloves for resin work. Latex does not provide adequate chemical resistance to epoxy compounds and can also cause latex allergies in sensitive individuals.
Change your gloves if they become contaminated with uncured resin. Resin that soaks through a glove or gets inside it provides no protection and increases skin contact time.
Double Gloving
For extended pour sessions or when working with large volumes of resin, double gloving adds an extra layer of protection. If the outer glove is compromised, the inner glove provides a backup barrier while you change gloves.
Respiratory Protection
Half-Face Respirator With Organic Vapor Cartridges
A half-face respirator fitted with organic vapor cartridges is the appropriate respiratory protection for working with epoxy resin. This type of respirator filters out the volatile organic compounds released by uncured resin and hardener during mixing and pouring.
A standard dust mask or surgical mask provides no protection against chemical vapors. These masks filter particles but allow gases and vapors to pass through freely. Do not use them as a substitute for a proper respirator when working with resin.
Replace your organic vapor cartridges according to the manufacturer's schedule or when you begin to detect odor through the mask, whichever comes first. Saturated cartridges provide no protection.
When Ventilation Alone Is Not Enough
Good ventilation reduces vapor concentration in your workspace but does not eliminate it. A respirator should be worn whenever you are actively mixing or pouring resin, regardless of how well ventilated your space is. Ventilation and respiratory protection work together, not as substitutes for each other.
Eye Protection
Safety Glasses or Goggles
Safety glasses with side shields or chemical splash goggles protect your eyes from splashes during mixing and pouring. Resin splashed into the eyes requires immediate flushing with water and medical attention. Standard eyeglasses do not provide adequate side protection.
If you wear prescription glasses, use safety glasses that fit over them or invest in prescription safety glasses for studio work.
Skin and Body Protection
Long Sleeves
Wear long sleeves when working with resin to minimize skin exposure on your arms. Resin that contacts skin should be removed immediately with soap and water or isopropyl alcohol before it cures. Do not use acetone or other harsh solvents on skin.
Apron
A dedicated studio apron protects your clothing and provides an additional barrier for your torso. Use an apron made from a material that can be wiped clean, such as vinyl or coated fabric. Wash or wipe your apron regularly to prevent resin buildup.
Workspace Safety
Ventilation
Work in a space with active airflow. Open windows and use a fan to move air out of the room rather than recirculating it. Position the fan so it draws air away from your breathing zone, not toward you. Avoid working in small, enclosed spaces without mechanical ventilation.
Fire Safety
Keep flammable materials away from your workspace, especially when using a butane torch. Have a fire extinguisher accessible in your studio. Store resin, hardener, and solvents away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
Skin Contact Protocol
If uncured resin contacts your skin, remove it immediately with soap and water. Isopropyl alcohol can help remove resin that has begun to set. Do not allow uncured resin to remain on skin. If irritation, redness, or swelling develops, wash thoroughly and consult a medical professional.
Disposing of Resin Safely
Never pour uncured liquid resin down the drain. Allow any leftover resin to cure fully in your mixing cup before disposing of it in the trash. Cured resin is inert and safe for standard disposal. Contaminated gloves, mixing cups, and other disposables should be allowed to cure before disposal as well.
