What Is Mica Powder?
Mica powder is a finely milled mineral pigment derived from natural mica, a silicate mineral found in rock formations around the world. It has been used for centuries in cosmetics, paints, and decorative arts for its natural shimmer and light-reflecting properties. In epoxy resin art, mica powder is one of the most popular and versatile colorants available.
Mica powder is non-toxic when fully encapsulated in cured resin, making it a safe and durable choice for functional pieces like trays, coasters, and lamp bases.
Why I Use Mica Powder
Mica is my primary colorant at Trayz N Beyond because of the depth and richness it brings to a finished piece. Unlike dyes or alcohol inks, mica powder creates a metallic or pearlescent shimmer that shifts with the light. A piece that looks deep burgundy in one light can reveal gold undertones in another. That kind of dimension is what makes handcrafted resin art feel truly luxurious.
How Mica Powder Works in Resin
Mica powder is added directly to mixed epoxy resin after combining Part A and Part B. The fine particles suspend throughout the resin and remain evenly distributed as the resin cures. The result is a smooth, consistent color with a built-in shimmer that does not fade, bleed, or separate over time.
Because mica is a solid pigment rather than a liquid dye, it gives you precise control over opacity. A small amount creates a translucent, jewel-toned effect. More mica creates a fully opaque, metallic finish.
How to Mix Mica Powder Into Resin
Start by fully mixing your resin according to the manufacturer instructions. Once Part A and Part B are thoroughly combined, add your mica powder a little at a time. A good starting point is 1 to 3 percent mica by weight of your total resin volume. Stir slowly and gently to incorporate the pigment without introducing air bubbles. Continue adding mica until you reach your desired color intensity and opacity.
Avoid adding too much mica. Overloading your resin with pigment can interfere with the curing process and result in a tacky or soft finish.
Mica Powder Finishes
Mica powders come in a wide range of finishes depending on the particle size and coating of the mineral.
Metallic mica has a strong, mirror-like shine and is best for bold, statement colors like gold, silver, copper, and bronze. Pearl mica has a softer, more iridescent shimmer that shifts between two or more colors depending on the viewing angle. Matte mica has a lower sheen and creates a more subtle, velvety color effect. Duochrome mica shifts dramatically between two distinct colors depending on the light source and angle.

Caring for Mica-Pigmented Resin Pieces
Mica powder is fully encapsulated in cured resin and will not rub off, fade, or change color over time. Clean your pieces with a soft damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scrubbers that could scratch the surface. Keep pieces out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the gloss finish.
